The fountain is decorated with allegorical figures that represent music, literature, science, and astronomy. It has an ornamental border of jumping fish, and small carved turtles along its base. It was dedicated to the daughter of a 16th century Polish poet, Jan Kochanowski, whose death at 2-1/2 years prompted him to write a series of 19 elegies. Children from St. Casimir’s Parish collected pennies to pay for the fountain.
