Storm Damage in Cultural Gardens

Posted by on November 2nd, 2012

The remnants of hurricane Sandy toppled a number of trees in the Cultural Gardens due to the high winds and very wet soil that prevented the roots from keeping them upright.  The Hungarian Garden in particular was hard hit with a tree falling into the iconic, iron Szekely Gate and bent the topmost portion or dovecote back as well as knocking over a small urn.  Due to a power line a full assessment of the damage is pending.  Another tree fell on the Hungarian Garden’s slope without any damage to infrastructure.  The Serbian Garden had a tree fall and crush the Garden sign but nothing else.  A tree fell around the Mickiewicz pillar in the Polish Garden and the Ivan Franko bust and pillar in the Ukrainian Garden; both without any damage to pillars or bust.  In the Romanian Garden five large trees came down, one in the British and another fell from the American to the Irish Gardens without any damage to either Garden’s infrastructure.  An estimated 36 trees fell in Rockfeller Park overall.  Photos of the Hungarian, Polish, Ukrainian and Serbian tree falls are below:
